Nature produces currents of fresh air containing negative ions. The level (or density) of negative ions varies widely with the seasons and weather, indoors and outdoors, especially in the presence of air pollutants. Heating and air conditioning systems are thought to remove negative ions from your home and office. Production of negative ions minimizes the number of airborne, man-made, and naturally occurring air pollutants, combat allergens, and reduce other health hazards such as tobacco smoke. The independent clinical trials at Columbia University Medical Center have demonstrated the antidepressant effects of negative ions for seasonal affective disorder (SAD, winter depression) as well as non-seasonal chronic depression.

There are two basic ways to use the system

1. Tethered

Using the grounded wrist strap for 30-60 minutes is the most efficient method, since it maximizes the flow of ions to the body rather than to grounded objects (e.g., telephone, clock radio, TV, radiators, even walls) in the same room. This method has been tested shortly after awakening, although other times of day may also be effective.

2. Untethered

Our example is in the bedroom. A 20 x 20 foot (6.1 x 6.1 meter) room with doors and windows shut will reach negative ion "stasis" or "saturation" in about an hour's time. The unit should be placed away from other electrical appliances (e.g., phone, clock radio, TV) and grounded objects (e.g., radiators, walls) that will tend to attract the ion flow and diminish the effect. The unit can be turned on at bedtime and turned off upon rising. Ion density is maximized if the room is humidified. Another tested method is automatic switching on of unit with a silent electronic appliance timer 90 minutes before wake-up time, with automatic switch off at wake-up time. Directing the ionizer wand toward the pillow area at a 2-3 foot (0.6-0.9 meter) distance will help to maximize the ion density experienced. Height off the floor should be slightly above mattress level (e.g., on a bed table or chair). There is no problem leaving the ionizer on 24/7 if this is more convenient. However placement should not be against a wall, in order to minimize gradual particulate accumulation.
